peak february bloom
The storm was passing, and the afternoon light was perfect. The succulents blooming in the front yard never looked better. I had to get the camera for this one!
In bloom are Aloe arborescens (orange-red) and a crassula species or relative (yellow). To the right, not in bloom but still dramatic, are two clones of a tree aloe (Aloe barberae). The low filler plant to the right is the California native coyote bush (Baccharis pilularis pilularis ‘Pigeon Point’). I don’t normally love the neighbor’s big pointy juniper in the background, but I think it completes this picture nicely.

what a beautiful picture with the stormy sky and dramatic light. I’m actually coming around to junipers and various other conifers…think they’ll be more popular in the near future. oh, and yay for rain!

Absolutely, I’m so happy for the rain!
Conifers seem to cycle in and out of fashion along with other plants (to topic of a post I’m assembling). I think they have their place, though planted 18 inches from the foundation of the house next door wasn’t the best place and use…

wow — what a great shot — the dark sky with the strong colours and forms in the foreground is wonderful — great shot James.

Pretty terrific shots of those gorgeous succulents, man. God, there are times I envy you San Diegans! Wait.….….when is there not one of those times?
Little known fact: I was born there. I could strangle my parents for moving, lol.
Love that picture, James.

Karen and Steve, thanks for the comments on the photo. We don’t get spectacular lighting like this very often! Too often it’s just plain sunshine or a blanket of clouds–not much in between.
