The image I have now of the florist's rose is akin to an out-of-date robot of the future: slumping and rusty, but the same shape as on the date of issue. And sad in its realization that it doesn't have a soul.

Thanks, Bird. I was probably a little harsh in the post--the florist rose did arrive as a very thoughtful gesture.

Elephant's eye, that's excellent news that the practice is changing. There does seem to be a certain amount of interest in greener practices for raising flowers. But with price still what most people look at when buying anything, it may be a slow change.

Here in South Africa our proteas are grown for the cut flower trade. They had a problem with sugarbirds, and their original solution was poison. I am so glad for the birds, and nature, that the solution is now to bag each bloom. And the birds are free to sip nectar from the wild proteas.

Beautifully written James, your description of how different these two gifts of roses were just gets it across perfectly; those florist roses may as well be plastic, no matter how kindly meant.
